Hello everyone! If you haven’t heard, I have a new weekly blog series called “Level Up” where, every Sunday, I’d touch on a way to take your blog and/or business to the next level. You can check out all the other posts in the series here!
So, in my last Level Up post, I talked about how to create evergreen content, and one of the ways was by updating old blog posts. Today, I thought I’d talk about six ways to make sure allllll of your old blog posts are up to par, whether or not they’re being turned into evergreen content. Let’s goooo…..
Back when I first started blogging, my blog post titles sucked. For reviews, I would straight up just write the book’s name as my post title, without including the author or the fact that I was writing a review. For example, one of my oldest reviews on the blog is of Black Friday by Robert Muchamore. Originally, the post was titled “Black Friday” which is definitely not helpful considering there are thousands of posts about the black Friday shopping which means my post was 100% going to get buried deeeeeeep in the internet. It also did not match the title format of all my more recent reviews so now the title is “Black Friday by Robert Muchamore – Review” which is infinitely more relevant and specific. Additionally, it includes at least one keyword that people search for often, “review”, which means that my blog post has a higher chance of being seen by someone searching for reviews of the book.
Considering the above, make sure to fix your titles to make sure they more accurately reflect the content within, while also being easily searchable. Some things to keep in mind when changing your titles are:
- other than using your newer blog post titles as templates, you can look at similar blog posts from your friends, within your blog community, and/or on Pinterest to get ideas and see what keywords are frequently used in titles.
- you can also see how long or short titles typically are for blog posts that get high traction
- there is a fine balance between a title that is too general and too niche, and honestly, you’re not going to get it every time, on the first time….that’s ok, you can tweak titles as needed.
- don’t change the slug (aka the end of your blog post’s permalink) of your post so that people who had the link to your blog post before the title change can still access it without getting confused. This is especially important for popular posts, and for posts whose titles you want to keep tweaking. If you don’t think the post was popular enough that it would be a big deal, feel free to change the slug, though.
Many of my old blog posts also didn’t have images with them. I don’t just mean for discussions or interviews, I also mean for reviews which is the easiest post to find an image for (just use the book cover!). Images help catch people’s attention and direct them to your blog post, though, so lately I’ve been adding in images for all the posts that don’t have em. For reviews, like I said, I make sure I include the book cover, at the very least. For my other posts, I make the graphics myself using a template I made a while ago on Canva. The template means that almost all the graphics I use are consistent and tie into my brand, so, when people see the image without the blog post, they can more quickly connect it with me/Avid Reader.
Add-In Affiliate Links And Disclaimers
Over the years, I’ve become an Amazon Affiliate which means that, for every product you buy through an Amazon link I provide, I make a percentage of that sale, at no cost to you. This is one of the ways I make money, so, now I make sure I add in Amazon Affiliate links wherever I can (if it’s relevant of course) both in my new posts and in the old blog posts that didn’t have them before. With that, though, I also add in a disclaimer on the post that they’re affiliate links so everything is all legal.

Include Internal Links
One way to get people to continue staying on your blog and reading is to link them to a similar blog post of yours that they can read. Maybe it’s the other posts in the series like what I do for all my Level Up posts, or maybe it’s a review of another book by the same author. Like I said, this increases engagement with your blog and can also help you get eyes on older posts that people may have forgotten about.
Include A Call To Action
With many of my older posts, I would just end the post abruptly with the final point of my review or the last question in the interview. Now, this seems really awkward and suchhhh a missed opportunity to increase contact and engagement with readers. Thus, at the end of all my posts, I add in a question related to the content and tell readers to comment below! If I have a downloadable, I also say “don’t forget to grab my free PDF of XYZ below”. In doing so, the readers have a concluding action that increases their engagement with my post and gives me a chance to get to know people in the community better.
Remove Broken Links
Over time, blogs are dropped, posts are deleted, links are changed etc which means there is a very high chance that you have a link on your blog that goes nowhere. This is both when linking to your own stuff and when linking externally. Therefore, when updating your blog (old posts, pages, sidebar), check any links you previously included to see if they’re broken or not. If you want to check out your entire website at one time, I recommend using Broken Link Check. It’s a free website that will let you know what links don’t work anymore and where on your blog the link was. It’s really easy to use (I just used it yesterday) and it’s quite helpful!
Aaaand that’s all for how to update your older blog posts! I like to update my blog posts in batches when I can before sharing them out again on social media and it just feels quite good. It’s a lot like spring cleaning so it makes my blog feel as new and fresh as possible. Anyways, with that, congrats, we Leveled Up!!! Have you updated your old blog posts recently?
